Greece, a country with an extensive coastline and numerous islands, faces a pressing need for systematic information and education on water safety. In recent years, drowning statistics have remained alarmingly high, highlighting the urgent need for collective action focused on prevention.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives under the umbrella of “Mission of Life” the Tsetis Group of Pharmaceutical Companies (OFET) placed particular emphasis this year on raising awareness around this critical issue—launching a long-term initiative with strong community impact.
The first phase of this initiative began on two popular and densely visited islands of the Cyclades — Paros and Mykonos — and was carried out under the auspices of the respective Municipalities, with the participation of teenagers and young residents of the local communities.
Specifically, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the educational seminar “Water Safety” was held in Paros, in collaboration with the Municipality of Paros, on Livadia Beach in Parikia, in the presence of Mayor Konstantinos Bizas, and the President of the Municipal Council, and the Unified Municipal Education Committee, Ifigenia Chatzigeorgiou.
The focus of the initiative was prevention and the transfer of life-saving knowledge, delivered by lifeguard instructors and swim coaches from Athinna Lifeguard School — founding members of the Hellenic Lifeguard School Association and the Center for Research and Prevention of Child Accidents of the University of Athens Medical School.
Since 2023, the seminar has been officially included in the Safe Water Sports action platform.
The initiative continued on the island of Mykonos, at the Grypareio Cultural Center, welcoming children and adults alike.
The event was warmly welcomed by Marsoula Chanioti, Deputy Mayor for Education and Social Welfare – Preschool Education and Care, who emphasized the fundamental importance of education as a pillar of prevention.
The seminar was conducted by Konstantinos Mountzouris, lifeguard instructor and swim coach from Athinna Lifeguard School, along with his team.
Committed to our “Mission of Life” we will continue to empower island communities by fostering a lasting culture of water safety awareness.
